Kiawah Island Offers Unique Recreational Activities for All Ages
Swimming, canoeing, kayaking, bicycling, cookouts, oyster roasts, sing-a-longs, and nature walks – all just a few of the extraordinary activities that Kiawah Island Golf Resort offers guests. It’s no surprise then that Conde Nast Traveler’s readers have voted Kiawah Island among the “Top 20” Islands in The World for resort activities.
The Nature Excursion Programs continue to receive national attention. The unique nature programs of this barrier island resort feature a variety of wildlife discovery adventures, which afford guests the opportunity to learn about the interesting ecology of the area through a series of interpretive excursions guided by staff biologists. Naturalists also conduct marsh creek canoe trips, sea kayaking, birding walks, night beach walks and bike tours. In the summer months, the program is extended to include off-island tours of the region by boat and tractor.
For the children, there’s Kamp Kiawah – a supervised, fun-filled activity program for ages 3 to 11. Established two decades ago, Kamp Kiawah keeps children enthralled with its Pirate Escapades, Nature Adventure Days, Tye Dye Days, Sand Sculpting, Hula Contests and Relay Races and more. It also allows parents some time to participate in island adventures of their own.
Kiawah Island Golf Resort has even created a Teen Program specifically for the most discriminating of youths. On the list of seasonal activities are Teen Survivor, Late Night Movies, Photo Scavenger Hunts, Basketball and Volleyball Tournaments, Dance Contests and more.
Parents won’t feel left out, though, because they can join their children and teens in activities specifically designed for Families, including Sand Sculpture Contests, Family Movies, Family Jeopardy, Family Beach Bashes, Bingo, Ice Cream Socials and Aqua Aerobics.
Kiawah Island also provides facilities for less structured activities, such as the 21-acre Night Heron Park complete with basketball courts, a soccer field, swimming pools, a pavilion area and a bicycle rental shop. Night Heron Park also serves as a popular gathering spot for special events, such as symphony concerts, family park cookouts, and beach music parties. The Heron Park Center encompasses a game room, including billiards, foosball and air hockey, as well as an expanded nature room with specimens of the island’s wildlife and plant life. The resort also has three pool complexes, 30 miles of paved bike paths and a fitness trail.
In addition to its daily activity schedule, Kiawah Island hosts The Kiawah Island Marathon each December with over 3,500 runners, and an annual triathlon that takes advantage of the Island’s beach and trails. The Charleston Symphony Orchestra also plays twice a year – the "Seaside Symphony" during the Spring, and the "Afternoon in the Park" during the Fall.
